Great Land of Alaska
California
I'm so comfortable and at home in Alaska that I wasn't sure if I wanted to take any trips outside of Alaska, but in July of 2006 I decided to take
a trip to the San Francisco area to visit a friend and see some new sights. Being in such a large city wasn't as bad as I expected, and I saw and did
a lot of fun things down there.
I followed up with a second journey down in November of 2008 and again in November of 2011.
Golden Gate Bridge

What visit to the Bay Area would be complete without a picture or two of the Golden Gate Bridge?
Alcatraz
A site easily visible from the Fisherman's Wharf area is the infamous Alcatraz Island prison, now a landmark and tourist
attraction as the prison ceased operations in 1963. I finally got to visit the island on my most recent trip down.

Downtown San Francisco
A few shots of downtown San Francisco, one during the day and a couple of the city lights at night.
Carmel coastal trail
Several shots of the coast along a coastal trail that we hiked near Carmel. Having grown used to seeing the silty brown/green
waters in the ocean in this part of Alaska, it was nice to see clear blue water and sandy beaches for a change.
Muir Woods
Muir woods was one of the sights I saw on my first trip down. I'd always wanted to see redwoods and I got my wish. These are
the biggest trees I've ever seen in my entire life.
Ground Squirrel
I got to see a few forms of small wildlife in California, such as this large ground squirrel standing beside the trail watching
the hikers go by.

Twin Peaks
A nice nighttime view of San Francisco from the top of Twin Peaks.

Golden Gate Park

Nice view of the bay and nice houses at Land's End in northwestern San Francisco.
